Internet Doomsday 2012

Internet Doomsday 2012

  • Gunakan Antivirus/Tools yang mumpuni dan up to date

Galeri publik

Pilihan editor

5. Untuk pilihan Upload Image from Computer, Google mempersyaratkan Wide Image dengan ukuran minimal 800x600 pixels. Adapun format Image yang didukung yakni :
.jpeg
.tif
.tiff
.bmp
.gif
.psd (Photoshop)
.png
.tga
dan format Kamera

Format Kamera yang dikenal antara lain :
Adobe (.DNG)
Canon (.CRW, .CR2)
Casio (.RAW)
Fuji (.RAF)
Hasselblad (.3FR)
Kodak (.DCR, .KDC)
Leica (.DNG and .RAW)
Minolta (.MRW)
Nikon (.NEF, .NRW)
Olympus (.ORF)
Panasonic (.RAW, .RW2)
Pentax (.PEF)
Ricoh (.DNG)
Samsung (.DNG)
Sigma (.X3F)
Sony (.SRF,.SR2)

Google Chrome (all series)
Internet Explorer 7.x
Internet Explorer 8.x
Firefox 3.x
Safari 3
Safari 4

The background image is no longer available.
Choose a new image

The background image is temporarily unavailable.
Check back soon

Picasa is unavailable right now so the background image can't be shown. It should be visible again shortly

Sorry, there seems to be a problem with the image picker.
Check back soon

Tool Upload mengalami masalah, sehingga Netter perlu mencobanya dikesempatan yang lain

Sorry, the image picker is unavailable. Check back soon

Unable to save the image. Trying again in X seconds...

Namun jangan khawatir, dicoba lagi sobat

No images matching ... Please try another search

The image is smaller than 800x600 pixels.
Please choose a different one

Persyaratan Dimensi Image tidak dipenuhi yakni minimal 800x600 px. Olehnya, cari lagi gambar lainnya yang berdimensi minimal sesuai persyaratan mbah GOOGLE.

Wallpapers that Change Automatically

The Windows XP wallpaper, a blue sky over green fields, is familiar to most computer users but that doesn’t mean we have to look at it all the time. It’s easy enough to change wallpapers and use photos stored on the hard disk or grabbed from websites, but it requires effort to track down good ones after an initial burst of enthusiasm for something new.

This Workshop explains how to change that by installing a simple free program, John's Background Switcher, that will deliver attractive new Desktop backgrounds automatically as individual images, scrapbooks or full-screen collages.

As we will show, these pictures can be stored on your computer or retrieved from free internet photo libraries and this opens up endless possibilities for giving your desktop that personal touch.

First, follow step below to download John's Background Switcher.

Go to www.johnsadventures.com by entering this address in your browser or clicking the link in the intro. Click the My Software link at the top and when the page loads, choose John’s Background Switcher. Scroll down the screen to the ‘Download the installer’ link and click that once. Ignore any security warnings and click Save. Choose a location for the download, such as the Desktop, and then click the Save button again to copy the file to your PC.

Find the Switcher Setup icon and double-click it. Ignore the Open File Security Warning dialogue and click Run. Follow the instructions to set up the software, accept the licence agreement and then when the last dialogue box appears, leave the two options there ticked and click the Finish button. After a second the ‘What’s New’ text file will open along with the Options dialogue where Background Switcher stores all its important settings. To get started straight away, click Yes to have the program use its default sources for photographs.

By default, Background Switcher will take photos from several sources on the free Flickr photo-sharing service and then display them full-screen, one after the other, changing every hour. For fun, we’re going to set pictures to change every minute so we get a better sense of what’s on offer. Open the dropdown menu and select 1 minute. We’ll explore other online sources of photos in the panel you'll see on the left and play with some of the settings a bit later on.

Click the OK button to confirm the change and have a read through the What’s New file; then close it by clicking the ‘X’ in the top right-hand corner. Move the mouse pointer down to the Windows Notification Area at the bottom right of the Taskbar, find the new Background Switcher icon there and right-click on it once to open the menu. From here it’s easy to move back and forth between wallpapers, save a particular image to disk, mark it to be ignored in future by selecting Never Show Again, and so on.

We’re going to use some of our own photos with Background Switcher. With the menu still open, move the mouse pointer to Settings and left-click. When the dialogue box opens, make sure Flickr is selected as the photo source in the left-hand panel and click Add. We’ve got a free Flickr account (set one up by visiting www.flickr.com) so we’re going to pull photographs down onto our test PC’s Windows Desktop from that. At the Photo Selection dialogue box we choose ‘A Specific Person’ from the dropdown menu, then type in our user name and click OK.

Click OK to confirm any changes. From now on, our own photos stored on Flickr will be mixed in with those taken from Background Switcher’s default selection. Look carefully at the top-right corner of this screen, it says ‘Sunset over lake’ by Adurman (that’s our account name). Let’s try something else. Right-click the Background Switcher icon again and choose Settings. This time, click the Folders icon on the left. This lets the program display pictures stored in any folder on the PC. The default is My Pictures, which is fine, so we click OK.

Background Switcher has some other interesting ways to showcase pictures. Open the Settings dialogue again and either stick with the same photo source, or switch to another. Then, find the Photo Options heading in the dialogue box. Open the dropdown menu and choose one of the other available layouts. Here we’re going to pick ‘thumbnail mosaic’. Click OK to confirm and after a moment, the Desktop fills with tiny pictures. (We’ve re-opened the Settings dialogue here to show the chosen option and the effect when it’s applied.)

Experiment with different layout styles by picking from the Photo Options list (the one in the background to this screen is ‘snapshot scrapbook’) and then go back to the Settings dialogue box and choose More Settings from the left-hand panel. From here it’s possible to alter the way Background Switcher behaves in all sorts of useful ways - the orientation of the photos, for example - as well as adding useful extras. Here we’re going to include a static three-month calendar on the Desktop.

Stay in the More Settings dialogue for a moment and click the next option down in the left-hand panel - Montages. Here Background Switcher provides the settings to change the individual size of the thumbnails themselves as well as those used in the scrapbook layout. It’s also possible to select a random background picture and add an effect such as monochrome or sepia. Here we’ve selected a random background and turned the effect off. Click OK to confirm the changes.

And here’s the result of our changes. Notice that the mosaic has been replaced by an attractive scrapbook-style arrangement with pictures scattered across the screen. This also features a calendar for the current month (larger and to the left) as well as two months ahead as specified in Step 8 (this is for reference only, it’s not a ‘live’ calendar). This kind of flexibility makes Background Switcher a genuinely powerful way to spice up any Windows Desktop.

Background Switcher is also smart enough to gather pictures from other sources, notably the Yahoo search engine and any site that has an RSS feed designed to push information over the internet to a PC. Let’s start with Yahoo. From the Settings dialogue, click the Yahoo button in the left-hand panel. After that, click the Add button and then type in a search query, for example ‘cat’, and then click OK. Again, we’ve re-opened the dialogue box to show the setting and the result.

Don’t just stick with a single search item. Instead, add as many to this list as you like. Here, for example, we’ve continued the pet theme by adding dog, horse and cow in exactly the same way as described in the previous step. Using the Yahoo search engine in this way limits the layout options offered by the program, restricting them to variations on a single image displayed at full screen as shown here.

Background Switcher also supports RSS feeds, which are often a good source of unusual or more up-to-date photographs. With the Settings dialogue open, click the RSS Feeds button in left-hand panel and then click Add. The Add/Edit Feed dialogue has some suggestions so click on one to open a web browser and go to the site. We’ve chosen Photobucket, home to a wide selection of great-looking photos on all sorts of subjects. When the site loads, we find a photo category we like (funny signs) scroll to the bottom and click the RSS icon.

When the RSS web page loads, right-click on the address in the Address or Location line at the top (where the ‘http://’ is) and choose Copy. Go back to Background Switcher and right-click in the empty URL box and choose Paste. Click the Test button to confirm the address is correct and that the feed works and then click OK and then OK again. Click OK twice more to close all the dialogue boxes. Again we have re-opened the Settings dialogue to show both the RSS feed and the photos it produces.

Start Free Internet Radio Station

If you're the kind of person who insists on handpicking a road-trip playlist rather than just setting your music player to shuffle, you were born for radio, baby. Fortunately, you don't have to let your daily life get in the way of your broadcasting fantasies. As long as you have a PC with a broadband connection, you have what it takes to inflict your talk-radio rants or musical taste on anyone who'll listen.

The Quick Way

For a quick and dirty way to stream music to your buddies, you can simply grab a male-to-male 3.5mm RCA audio cable, plug one end into the microphone jack and the other end into the headphone jack, and either start a Skype session or sign up for an account with a Web-based streaming service (Justin.tv or Ustream.tv, for example) to get going.

Your computer will feed your audio output (from the headphone jack) to the audio input (from the mic jack) and broadcast it to whoever is on your stream. All you have to do is open up your MP3 player of choice and you're ready to rock.

Justin.tv even supports Youtube playlists, so your listeners can stay on after you sign off.
Of course, if you want to set up something that gives your listeners a distinctly radio experience, you'll have to do a little more work than that.

Perform the steps below, and you'll have an online radio station that can stream to Icecast or Shoutcast servers like the big radio stations do.

Step 1: Get Your Gear

You don't need any special audio gear for this project aside from a mic, if you plan to say anything (song introductions, station identifications, or whatever). What you do need is a handful of different apps: one to play your music files, one to turn the audio feed into a streamable source, and one to act as a server for sharing your stream with the world.

You have plenty of options to choose from in all of the above categories, and each app has its own merits. In this tutorial, we'll use Winamp to play the music, Edcast (the Winamp plug-in, not the stand-alone version) to turn it into a stream, and Icecast2 to serve it up. The Edcast/Icecast2 pairing is unusually easy to configure for different types of radio servers and audio formats.

You'll also need to download a special .DLL file (lame_enc.dll) if you want to broadcast in an MP3 format (which is more compatible with older audio players): Download the zipped version, unzip it, and put lame_enc.dll in Winamp's root directory (it usually is located in C:/Program Files/Winamp).

Step 2: Set Up Your Server

Before you start streaming, you'll need to estimate the size of audience you expect (or want). Your capacity to stream music depends on your Internet connection's upstream speed the speed at which you can send data to other computers. At faster upstream speeds, you can accommodate more listeners with a higher level of audio quality.

Since both connection speeds and digital audio quality are measured in kilobits per second (kbps) not in kilobytes per second (KBps) you can figure out how much bandwidth you need to serve your radio station by plugging the numbers into this formula:

Simultaneous listeners x Audio bitrate = Required bandwidth

If you're hosting the station on a home PC with a typical cable or DSL connection, your upstream speeds probably aren't great. My home DSL's upstream speeds tops out at about 500 kbps (about 50 KBps), and a high-quality MP3 feed requires at least 192 kbps, so I'd be able to accommodate only two listeners and I'd barely be able to do anything with my Internet connection.

I could lower the quality of the feed to, say, 96 kbps, but then the audio quality of my stream would be significantly worse. For talk radio, it would probably be fine; but for music, it might sound as though songs were being transmitted over a phone.

Fortunately, the stream server doesn't have to live on the same PC as the audio source. You can use your PC to play the music with Winamp and to source it with Edcast, and then send the stream over the Internet to a dedicated radio stream server equipped with a high-bandwidth connection. If you use that approach, your broadband connection needs to strong enough to send out one stream to the dedicated server but it doesn't have to be any stronger. Also, you don't have to monopolize your Internet connection to keep up your radio station, since you're sending a single stream to the server, which then handles each listener with its own broadband connection.

Typically, you have to pay for a dedicated radio server; the rates start at about $6 per month and increase as your radio station's traffic grows. But some free Shoutcast radio servers rely on ads to pay the bills. One such server, FreeStreamHosting.org, invites you to broadcast a 128-kbps stream to up to 1000 users at no charge and the ads stay out of your audio stream (instead, they get displayed on the Web page you use to advertise your station).

I recommend signing up for a dedicated radio server: The cost is far less than what you'd pay for a home Internet connection (which for practical purposes you wouldn't be able to use for anything else), and such servers are slightly easier to configure.

If you opt for a dedicated streaming server, make sure that you know the host's IP address or URL, the correct port number, the stream password, the server type (usually it's either Shoutcast or Icecast2), and the maximum bitrate (if applicable) before moving on.

If you want to run your own server, download and install Icecast2, open the app, and select Edit Configuration from the Configuration menu. This will open a text document called 'icecast.xml', which you'll have to tweak a bit. From top to bottom:

* For the 'sources' tag, enter the maximum number of listeners you want your station to have.
* For the 'source-password' tag, enter the password you want to use for your stream app (Edcast).
* The 'relay-password' and 'admin-password' tags aren't important for this how-to, but change them from the default 'hackme' anyway.
* For the 'hostname' tag, enter your IP address. If you want to broadcast only to your network, use your internal network's IP address. Otherwise, you can find your outside IP address at WhatsMyIP.net.
* The 'port' tag refers to the port you'd like to use to stream the music. I left mine on the default 8000. Remember, you'll probably need to open this port in your firewall in order for your radio station to work.

Save the icecast.xml doc (in the root icecast2 directory, usually C:/Program Files/icecast2), and click Start Server in Icecast2's main window.

Step 3: Configure the Source App

Now that your stream server is running, you need to give it something to stream. That's where Edcast comes in. Grab the Edcast Winamp plugin, open Winamp, go to Options, Preferences, Plug-ins, DSP/Effect, select edcast DSP v3 [dsp_edcast.dll], and click Configure active plugin.

Here you can set Edcast to use either your microphone jack or your Winamp playlist. Just click the mic picture to enable or disable the mic; when the mic is disabled, Edcast will use Winamp for its input. You can test this yourself by clicking on the sound-level meter to activate it, playing some music through Winamp, and toggling the mic off and on to see whether each input is working.

Next, click Add Encoder to add a new entry (Vorbis: Quality 0/Stereo/44100) in the box below, and double-click the new entry to configure it. Here you'll need to plug in your server settings make sure that the server type is set to the right protocol (Shoutcast or Icecast2, depending on which server you chose in step 2), enter your server's IP in the Server IP field (if you're hosting the Icecast server on the same PC, it's your IP address), and enter the corresponding port and password.

You'll also want to set your encoder type here: AAC and MP3 tend to be the most widely compatible; AAC+ is optimized for lower-bitrate audio applications (perfect for streaming), but it sometimes doesn't sound as good; and Ogg Vorbis has fairly high audio quality at lower bitrates, but certain music player apps (iTunes, for example) don't natively support it.

If you're using Icecast2, note the 'mountpoint' entry in the Basic Settings tab. You'll need to put a path here depending on your encoder type: Ogg Vorbis streams can be called '/whatever.ogg'; AAC streams, '/whatever.aac'; and so on. This string will eventually appear at the end of your radio station's URL, as in 'http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8000/whatever.aac'.

When you're satisfied with the way your station works, you'll want to click over to the YP Settings tab to configure your public listing information (station name, URL, genre, and so on), but for now you don't need to mess with it.

Step 4: Play That Funky Music

Icecast2 (or your dedicated radio server) is up, Edcast is configured, and your Winamp collection is ready to rock. So click Connect in the Edcast window to connect Edcast to your radio server, and start spinning away.

It's no fun if you don't have an audience, though. If you opted for a separate radio server, you'll probably have your own URL (something like http://s3.myradiostream.com/24212.htm) but if you're using Icecast2, the URL to access your radio stream will be http://(youripaddress):(port)/(mountpoint), without parentheses.

If your IP address is 192.168.0.1 and you are using port 8000 and you set the mountpoint to '/stream.ogg', your listeners can tune in by pointing their audio player of choice to http://192.168.0.1:8000/stream.ogg.

Linking your radio station URL to your IP address can be a pain particularly if you don't have a fixed IP address for your home broadband because your listeners will have to keep up with your IP changes. To avoid this complication, you can register your own domain name; but if you don't want to shell out the cash, you can sign up for a free DynDNS.com domain name instead.

Step 5: Don't Get Sued

The intricacies of broadcasting and copyright law are outside the scope of this how-to. Generally speaking, however, if you want to broadcast someone else's music legally, you need to obtain the permission of both the artist and the recording company that produced and distributes those recordings, which can cost a small-time broadcaster a lot of money and time.

Rather than play Russian roulette with the RIAA, consider acquiring licensing through a service such as Live365.com, the JPL program of the SWCast Network, or LoudCity. These organizations offer different ways to get your station appropriately licensed for a monthly fee based on factors such as how many listeners you have.

You also need to ensure that your radio station complies with the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) when you program your playlists. Live365.com has posted a summarized list of rules you must follow.

Alternatively, if you play your own music or if you get permission from independent bands that don't have a recording industry contract to play their music, you're all set. Music licensed under the Creative Commons can work, too, though it depends on the specific license that the artist uses: If you run advertisements on your station, you might not be able to use music licensed for noncommercial broadcasting only.

Computer can Lead to Stress

1. Komputer masih dalam Box (belum dirakit)
2. Tidak ada sumber listrik untuk menghidupkannya
3. Belum diinstall salah satu Operation System (OS)
4. OS under DOS, si operator hanya menguasai Windows
6. Mati lampu karena perbuatan penguasa listrik
7. Not available Internet (target Blogger, Facebooker and other netter)
8. Ukuran monitor hanya 1 inci (kacamata terinjak Elephant)
9. Hard Disk is full with songs and videos but no player build in (putar pakai tangan biar ramah lingkungan)

Shoutmix : UNAVAILABLE or non-ACTIVE

Semalam semuanya masih normal seperti biasa. But, coba perhatikan yang terjadi sejak tadi pagi.

4. Tombol Shout! : layaknya tombol ENTER untuk mengeksekusi pengiriman
5. Tombol + : digunakan untuk membuka kotak dialog Emoticon/Smiley
6. Tombol Refresh/Segarkan : tombol ini digunakan untuk menyegarkan halaman Shoutmix, khususnya kotak inbox sehingga kondisinya menjadi REALTIME/kondisi sekarang

Sekarang perhatikan kolom Website.

Cable Cutters is Cheap Alternatives to TV, DSL and Cell Service

I don't like service providers. Cable TV, landline phone and fax, mobile phone, ISP, and even satellite radio companies have so little real competition that they know they don't have to impress me very much to get my business. I either pay the full fees and become connected to them by their cord (physical or wireless), or I don't get any service. Until lately.

Now those companies face new pressure from Web based technologies and services that can offer similar features for far less money, or even for free. Many of these services ride in on the cord owned by the big service provider, relegating said service provider to the job of operating "dumb pipes."

Which TV executive knew just a few years ago that paid and free online services could threaten cable companies? Ditto for the VoIP challenge to landline phones, online fax services replacing another cord, Internet radio being a better value than a satellite subscription, and more.

Here I'll explain the alternatives that can help you walk away from the biggest corded companies that we love to hate. You can pick and choose which are still worth keeping and which to toss. Are you being pressured into buying a service provider's "triple play"? Try three strikes and you're out.

Pay for TV and Movies Instead of Cable Service

The cable and satellite TV model is on life support. Who wants to pay $100 or more a month for an endless well of unwatched shows? Even if you have an appetite for premium channel shows, you can save money by buying some à la carte and watching others free online.

Paid, per show TV sources are all around you. Apple iTunes, Amazon VOD, Zune Marketplace, Blockbuster On Demand, and Jaman store thousands of shows and movies.

All offer various purchase and rental options, often $3 to $4 to rent a movie for a day. Expect to drop about $30 to $40 per season of scripted, premium channel TV (HBO, Showtime, and such), or, often, about $10 less for network shows.

That sounds pricy at first, and it often costs more than buying a physical disc. But total up four or five of those seasons and a handful of movies, and you could pay half as much as cable over the same time period.

If you want to watch video on a portable device, stick with iTunes for iPod and iPhone compatibility; or Zune Marketplace for Zune support. Unfortunately, the other stores don't offer portable media player support. If you have an AppleTV or an Xbox 360, you can at least watch your shows in the living room.

Netflix is a good base service for any cable TV free home. The cheapest subscription for the DVD by mail service is $8.99 each month, but much of the value comes in the thousands of shows and movies you can stream from Netflix to your PC. Plus, Netflix can stream to a TiVo, Xbox 360, PS3, dedicated Roku device, and other hardware, so you can watch in the living room without a media center PC.

Similar streaming services like Amazon, Blockbuster, Jaman, and others can play on much of the same hardware. Check your TV connected hardware against these services' support pages.

I've also got my eye on the upcoming Boxee Box and Sezmi service; both will offer hardware that plays Internet streamed video on a TV. Sezmi, which will be rolling out nationwide this year, even promises local shows and live sports, one of the biggest deficits in online libraries.

Get Free TV And Movies

Hulu is still my king of free TV sites, although it's uncertain if it will or won't change to a paid model. And I've been occasionally frustrated when show episodes or seasons disappear just before I try to watch. But the majority of recent network shows are available. Plus, you'll find movie and TV favorites alongside B level misses.

As I write this, you can watch "Spartacus" and "All the King's Men" alongside the Norm MacDonald vehicle, "Dirty Work."

Check Hulu first, but also scan other sites for free TV and movies. Crackle, Comcast Fancast, and even YouTube have movies and TV content. If you you're looking for a specific show that you still can't find online, visit its Web site or its network site directly.

Live sports can still be elusive. Check the network that's broadcasting the content for a stream; I saw a Monday Night Football game this way last fall. MLB.com hosts live baseball, but you'll have to pay for service. Justin.tv could be your best ace for any sport. While unsanctioned, many users play live streams of their local stations; just click the sports button.

And remember the cheapest, highest quality TV source of all: an antenna. Over the air HD content looks great, often better than video compressed for a cable TV feed. You'll just need a TV with an HD tuner typical for most sets built in the last several years or a PC TV tuner.

Cut Landline Phone And Fax Service

If you have a reliable ISP, a voice over IP (VoIP) phone company can replace a traditional landline. You can place calls through a PC, but you'll have a better experience on a dedicated VoIP handset. The device connects to your network over Wi Fi or wired ethernet to route calls.

Skype deserves its VoIP ubiquity. You'll make free calls to other members or pay about 2 cents per minute to dial out to a real phone. Traditional phones can also call in to you. But several alternatives challenge the Skype giant.

I like the features and versatility of RingCentral. Depending on the package you buy, you'll get a local phone number for incoming calls, an incoming toll free number, and an incoming fax line. Call routing functions make RingCentral excel. Like Google Voice or my1voice, RingCentral can send incoming numbers to any phone. You can have it ring your VoIP handset, a mobile line, a hotel room, a temporary office, or anywhere you happen to be. Or you can have it go straight to voice mail during off hours, if you don't want to be reached.

Most RingCentral plans bundle fax service, or you can just pick that for about $8/month. You'll send and receive faxes through e mail, and cut the cost of a dedicated, traditional fax line. Many other companies sell fax service, too. Check out Mbox, eFax, and MyFax for several options, all priced in a similar range.

Free Yourself From Wireless Phone Service

If you like your current handset or smartphone, you might not be able to change wireless providers. Your device is almost certainly locked to your carrier, and worse, there's a chance that differing network technologies mean you can't move your phone to a different network even if it's unlocked.

AT&T and T Mobile rely on GSM networks; Sprint uses CDMA; and most Verizon handsets use CDMA, but Verizon also offers some dual mode devices that support both network types. An unlocked iPhone is still single mode, so it will never work on a Sprint network, for example. Ask a carrier you're considering how they can enable your old phone.

For GSM devices, including Apple's iPhone, your best option could be unlocking the handset, then swapping in a GSM SIM (subscriber identity module) card from the new provider. Even a prepaid card can work, which drains your account only when you use service.

If you want to completely cut wireless phone service, you could try hopping between Wi Fi hotspots while using a VoIP app. Truphone and Fring work on Android devices, BlackBerrys, iPhones, and even iPod touch media players. (You'll need a headset microphone for any of the players.) It's not the same as real wireless phone service, but it might be enough for some users in some situations.

You can beat text messaging fees by sending texts through an instant messenger app or in e mail. And instead of paying for your carrier's voice mail transcription service, you can substitute SpinVox, PhoneTag, YouMail, or Google Voice.

Revise Your Internet Service

Look for a network without a lock icon to try to gain access.

Did you shop around for your ISP? You might not be getting the best price or service. Check out Broadband Reports for customer reviews. You could find a locally grown alternative to the faceless corporation that you currently use.

You might be able to completely break free from home, wired Internet service. First, walk around your house running inSSIDer. Try to reach a friendly neighbor or café. Or if a neighbor's signal is locked, ask around, and offer to pay part of the fee to join the network and share service.

Wi Fi service subscriptions from T Mobile, Boingo, and others can pay off if you frequent airports and other locations with their coverage. But you're almost as likely to find an open, free network. (To be fair, however, if you need an always on connection wherever you are, nothing beats an EvDO modem stick from Sprint or Verizon.)

Several Web sites map Wi Fi networks, and are good places to check out before you hit the road. Try Jwire, WeFi, and Hotspotr.

If you require an always on connection, you might be better off buying short or long term service from Sprint or Verizon. You can buy a USB plug that connects a single laptop, or a home desktop for that matter. Many mobile phones can also be tethered to a laptop as part of your service plan, sharing the wireless Internet feed. Or opt for a portable router such as the MiFi, and it'll turn its mobile connection into a Wi Fi, Internet bubble. The router will work in your car and could be cheaper than a hotel's Internet service.

Break Out of Satellite Radio's Orbit

Monthly satellite radio service might not be worth what you pay. If your favorite talk show is in an exclusive contract, you could be stuck, but music listeners have alternatives. Try Pandora, Last.fm, and Slacker from a PC or even a smartphone.

Last.fm is free, and the others offer both paid and free versions. All build music programming based on your preferences. If you indicate that you don't like a certain song or musician, they'll adjust your playlist to better match your tastes.

The mobile versions of these services are an especially exciting proposition. They offer the possibility of replacing traditional car radio by streaming music wirelessly to your smartphone in the car. This, of course, is highly dependent on the 3G wireless coverage you're getting as you drive, but that coverage is getting broader and faster all the time. Additionally, Slacker can cache stations to your device so you can play music without any Internet connection. This helps when you're driving across no coverage zones.

Get a Discount, or Cut Ties

Sometimes you just can't cut the cord. In spite of poor service and price gouging, you might need some of these services. For one last alternative, try calling up and asking for a discount. It's worked for me, especially with TV and Internet service.

Arm yourself with details on your current companies' introductory deals and competitors' rates, and ask for a break. If you don't get a good answer, call back, and ask someone else.

Even if you only cut one of these services, you could save a lot. Pay for what you want and only what you use to take back control of your subscriptions.

Vodafone Revs Femto Engine

Vodafone UK stepped up its femtocell efforts in a big way Monday with the launch of a national marketing campaign, new brand, and a dramatically cheaper price for its small home base stations.

Vodafone has quietly offered a femtocell called the Vodafone Access Gateway since July 2009 for a one off cost of £160 (US$261).

Now, though, the operator is ready to make a big noise about the little base stations. The operator revealed today that the new name for its femtocell is the Sure Signal. (A name that's an open invite for criticism should the device not work).

But it's the new price of the Sure Signal femto that will surely raise eyebrows: The operator has slashed the cost of the device to a one off fee of £50 (US$82) or £5 (US$8) per month for 12 months-with monthly price plans of £25 (US$41) or more.

For monthly plans that are less than £25, the Sure Signal costs a one off £120 (US$196) or £5 per month for 24 months.

That price reduction is not the result of a drastic drop in the cost of making femtocells. Rather, Vodafone says it's prepared to deepen its subsidy on the femtos because of the gains it says it gets in customer satisfaction and subscriber acquisition-particularly new customers that defect from other operators.

According to Lee McDougall, senior product marketing manager at Vodafone UK, a "greater level of subsidy is worthwhile." [We'll be] subsidizing heavily and marketing heavily as well," says McDougall. "We're seeing really great benefits and feedback."

He also notes, though, that there has been a "slight reduction" in the femto prices because the operator is "ordering in much bigger volumes now." But McDougall wouldn't disclose how many Vodafone is ordering now, or how much it's paying per femtocell.

For the fledgling femto industry, Vodafone's move in the U.K. is a significant endorsement for the little home base stations.

Boosting the iPhone indoors?
The launch of the Sure Signal conveniently coincides with Vodafone's launch of Apple's iPhone on January 14. But McDougall says that was "coincidental, but timely… just the way things panned out."

So, the femtocell is not just aimed at iPhone users. The primary application for the device is improved 3G coverage at home and in small offices. Check out the video about the Williams family's coverage plight here on Vodafone's site, which gives a good idea of how the operator is marketing the Sure Signal and using it a differentiator.

"Only Vodafone can guarantee the signal in your home," says McDougall.

While Vodafone mainly targets the Sure Signal at consumers, the operator has also launched price plans for small businesses (which do not include value-added tax): A £42.56 (US$70) one off charge or £4.26 (US$7) per month for 12 months for Your Plan for Small Business and Storm price plans of £21.26 (US$35) or more.

Or, for price plans of less than £21.26 (US$35), the Sure Signal costs £102 (US$167) or £4.26 (US$7) per month for 24 months.

Along with the new marketing push, Vodafone has also updated its back office systems for the femto service. Previously, customers had to call Vodafone so that someone could manually register their phone number with the femtocell. Now, that procedure is automated. Customers can log on to their Sure Signal web service portal to add or remove phone numbers, and the changes are made in real time.
